Even though their music is easily enjoyable by listeners of all ages, Christmas Angel: A Family Story is the first album Mannheim Steamroller has made that is directly targeted at family audiences. Not that the music sounds that different -- it's still the Fresh Aire we have all grown to love -- but the music tells a story that should delight children and parents alike.
Longtime holiday favorite Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas Extraordinaire is yet another holiday collection by the group. It's not much of departure from Mannheim's other holiday collections. If anything, it aims to resurrect the spirit of preceding holiday releases by Mannheim. There's a good chance if you enjoy other Mannheim holiday albums you'll enjoy this one. It's not one of the group's more noteworthy releases, but it should please Mannheim's devoted following. Some of the featured songs include "Hallelujah," "White Christmas," "Away in a Manger," and "Winter Wonderland," among others.
Everyone's favorite new age synthesizer/acoustic trio returns with a twenty-year retrospective of holiday traditions; easily their strong suit and what they are most famous for in the public eye. Recorded live at over six venues on their latest tour, the group presents a balance of contemporary favorites, international Christmas standards and traditional religious hymns. A guest appearance by Johnny Mathis on "O Tannenbaum" definitely ranks among the highlights; as well as their anthemic rendition of "Deck The Halls."

Instrumental Escape is absolutely beautiful. As one media reviewer states "it's obvious that this composer has poured his heart and soul into these passionate works of art". This contemporary instrumental gem includes piano, flute, cello, acoustic guitar, violin, electric guitar, drum kit and rhythmic hand percussion accented by the hammered dulcimer and placed in lush orchestral arrangements. Heartfelt, yet joyously energetic and engaging, the combining of these instruments creates a three-dimensional palette of intricate cross-rhythms and evocative soundtrack-like pieces that rise and fall like shooting stars under the night skies.

The Story of Adiemus We will draw near Adiemus, literally translated, means 'we will draw near'. Curiously enough, Karl Jenkins was unaware of the word's meaning when he created it. He believed it to be an invented word of his own imagination. Now, years after the initial Adiemus project was launched, Karl has discovered that Adiemus has a meaning in Latin (with a slight variation in spelling). The irony does not escape him, especially since one of the core ideas in the Adiemus project involves using vocals singing an invented language. As Karl puts it: "The text in Adiemus is written phonetically, with the words viewed as instrumental sound. The human voice is the oldest instrument and by removing the distraction of lyrics, we hope to create a sound that is universal and timeless. The knowledge that Adiemus has a meaning - 'we will draw near' invokes what I feel to be an appropriate concept of bringing people together.
Peace on Earth is the first holiday album by Kitaro and takes long time holiday favorites and orchestrates them with ethereal overtones, spiritual subtleties and bursts of theatrical effects. Also included is an original Christmas composition composed by Kitaro.
James Galway's Christmas Carol is a richly varied collection of traditional, classical, and Irish carols, all delivered with grace and style. Although Galway never takes risks, it's for the best, because this music sounds best when it's delivered straight. That's the case here -- there may be no surprises on Christmas Carol, but it delivers exactly what his fans want from a Galway holiday album.
Arthur Fieldler takes you to "A Christmas Festival" where he will lead you on a "Sleigh Ride" to a "Winter Wonderland" to celebrate an absolutely beautiful "White Christmas" with the Boston Pops Orchestra and Chorus. Make it a "Silent Night" and listen to some of the classic Christmas carols of all-time - "The Nutcracker: Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy," "What Child Is This?" and a host of heavenly chorus singing a "Christmas Medley" of "Here We Come A-Caroling," "O Christmas Tree" and "I Saw Three Ships." This is one my favorite Christmas music CD's of all-time. The music of Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra has been a part of our very musical household when I was growing up. Likewise, this recording takes me back to my cherished memories of Christmases in the past. This is Christmas music at its best. The arrangements are perfectly done, the orchestration is superb, the choice of material is truly impeccable, and the chorus is outstanding. Merrily recommended for your Holiday listen and let your ears capture its magic.
With three previous holiday albums under his belt, smooth-jazz soprano saxophonist Kenny G is no stranger to Christmas/Hanukkah-themed music. On this 2005 release, G compiles tracks from his MIRACLES, FAITH, and WISHES collections, and adds a few new Yuletide songs to the mix, including light, soothing takes on "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas."
Narada has been turning out scores of old classics with a New Age twist, and listeners and often the songs themselves--are the better for it. So it is with Narada's first Christmas collection. This isn't just a chance to show off weird instruments or weirder arrangements but rather just a slightly different take on old favorites, such as Joy to the World, What Child Is This?, and nine other classic pieces. All of them are worth hearing and savoring. Featured artists include pianists Paul Speer and David Lanz, the latter one of my all-time favorites for his command of the keyboard; Peter Buffett and Bruce Mitchell. Some of these recordings will make you shiver for their excellent performance. The musicians original approach will make you sit up and pay attention but will not take you so far from the classic version of the pieces that you won t recognize them. In other words, it s not rock and roll bands doing the Twelve Days of Christmas.
Mannheim Steamroller's first all-new holiday album in six years features the legendary Johnny Mathis singing the "Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting)," as well as Olivia Newton-John in "Christmas Lullaby," a beautiful new song penned by Mannheim mastermind Chip Davis. Other selections include dynamic arrangements of the Yuletide favorites "Let it Snow," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "Frosty the Snowman," and more.
