Содержание
Действие 1
В селе Домнине близ Костромы население торжественно встречает молодых воинов, возвращающихся домой после победоносной битвы с поляками, вторгшимися на русскую землю. Антонида с замиранием сердца ожидает своего жениха, Собинина, также принимавшего участие в защите отчизны. Сусанин, её отец, подходит к ней и с волнением сообщает, что поляки отступили лишь временно, теперь они готовятся к новому нападению, к новой битве. Сусанин твёрдо решил, что свадьба Антониды не состоится до тех пор, пока чужеземцы попирают русскую землю. Наконец появляется долгожданный Собинин. Он приносит весть даже более важную, чем весть об одержанной победе: легендарный народный герой Минин выбран вождем ополчения. Минин — надежда всего народа. Услышав добрую весть, Сусанин соглашается на свадьбу дочери и Собинина. (Если говорить об опере "Жизнь за царя", а не о "Иване Сусанине", то Собинин приносит весть о том, что "на Москве собор великий выбирает нам царя". Поэтому, когда в 3 акте Михаил Федорович Романов становится царем - Антонида выходит замуж.)
Действие 2
Бал во дворце польского короля Сигизмунда III. Король даёт своим друзьям великолепный пир. Льётся вино, звучит музыка, прекрасные танцовщицы волнуют сердца присутствующих. Победа, правда, ещё не одержана, но всё же польские магнаты празднуют успехи своего войска на русской земле. Веселье нарушается появлением гонца, который приносит грозную весть: Минин возглавил русское ополчение и выступил против поляков. Музыка сразу смолкает, танцовщицы исчезают, кубки с вином остаются на столах недопитыми. Король Сигизмунд отдаёт приказ: «Вперед против Минина! Вождь русских должен быть взят живым или мёртвым!»
В доме Сусанина идут оживлённые приготовления к свадьбе Антониды и Собинина. Сусанин рассказывает своему приёмному сыну Ване, что Минин разбил лагерь неподалёку, в Ипатьевском монастыре, куда к нему стекается вооруженный люд. Свадебное веселье в самом разгаре, когда в дом врываются поляки и приказывают Сусанину провести их в место тайного сбора ополченцев Минина. Сусанин делает вид, что подчиняется требованию поляков, но тем временем обдумывает, как спасти Минина и собирающееся русское войско. В голове его быстро созревает хитрый план. Он заведёт поляков в лесную чащу, откуда они не смогут выбраться. Ваня же предупредит Минина, что поляки напали на его след, пусть он ищет для сбора войска другое место.
Действие 4
Картина 1. Собинин собирает отряд.
Картина 2. У стен монастыря. Ваня вовремя добегает до лагеря Минина. Ополченцы выступают против поляков.
Картина 3. Лесная чаща. Сусанин уже больше не скрывает от поляков, что завел их туда, где им суждено погибнуть. Он готовится принять смерть и в драматическом монологе прощается с родным домом, семьей, Родиной. Поляки бросаются на Сусанина и убивают его. Русские воины под предводительством Собинина приходят слишком поздно. Поляков они победили, но спасти Сусанина им не удалось.
Эпилог
Площадь перед московским Кремлём. Москва празднует победу русского войска, освободившего страну от врага. Под звон колоколов народ чествует память Ивана Сусанина, пожертвовавшего жизнью за Родину, и окружает любовным вниманием его осиротевшую семью.

The original title of the opera was to be Ivan Susanin, after the hero, but when Nicholas I attended a rehearsal, Glinka changed the title to A Life for the Tsar as an ingratiating gesture. This title was retained in the Russian Empire until the October Revolution, when it reverted to Ivan Susanin...
As popular as the opera was, its Tsarist-leaning libretto was an embarrassment to the Soviet state. After some unsuccessful attempts were made to remedy this situation, in 1939 the poet S.M. Gorodetsky rewrote the text to remove references to the Tsar and otherwise make the libretto politically acceptable.
Synopsis
Time: The autumn of 1612 and the winter of 1613.
Act 1
The village of Domnino
Antonida is eager to marry Sobinin, but her father Susanin refuses permission until a Russian has been duly chosen to take the Tsar's throne. When Sobinin informs him that the Grand Council in Moscow has chosen a Tsar, everyone celebrates.
Act 2
Poland
In a sumptuous hall, the nobility are celebrating the Polish dominance over the Russians with singing and dancing. Suddenly a messenger comes in, with the news that Mikhail Romanov has been selected as the Tsar of Russia and is now in hiding. The Poles vow to overthrow him.
Act 3
Susanin's cabin
Susanin and his adopted son Vanya pledge to defend the new Tsar. Susanin blesses Sobinin and Antonida on their upcoming wedding. A detachment of Polish soldiers bursts in, demanding to know where the Tsar is hiding. In order to protect the Tsar, Speaking privately to Vanya, Susanin tells him that he will lead the soldiers off the trail, and sends Vanya off to warn the Tsar. Pretending to help them, Susanin goes off with the Poles. Antonida is devastated. Sobinin gathers some men to go on a mission to rescue Susanin.
Act 4
A dense forest
Sobinin reassures his men of the rightness of their mission. Night falls. In a part of the forest near a monastery, Vanya knocks at the gates and alerts the inhabitants to spirit the Tsar away. Susanin has led the suspicious Polish troops into an impassable, snow-covered area of the forest. The Poles sleep while Susanin waits for the dawn and bids farewell to his children. A blizzard sets in, and when day breaks, the Poles awake. When they realize that Susanin has deceived them, they kill him.
Epilogue
Red Square, Moscow.
Across the stage walks a crowd of people, celebrating the triumph of the new Tsar. Alone in their own solemn procession, Antonida, Sobinin, and Vanya mourn Susanin. A detachment of Russian troops comes upon them and, after discovering their connection with Susanin, comforts them. As the scene changes to Red Square, the people proclaim glory to the Tsar and to Susanin's memory.

Teatro alla Scala
C'est à une représentation lyrique exceptionelle que ce DVD vous convie !.. Il y'a avant tout une production époustouflante avec des décors et costumes somptueux . Certes Zeffirelli n'est pas réputé pour sa sobriété, mais il faut bien avouer que dans le cas d'un opéra aussi dense que Don Carlo cela "marche" à fond ! Magnifique plateau vocal : Ramey est un Phillippe II racé, àl'émouvante douleur intériorisée et à la classe irréprochable, Coni un Posa engagé ; D'Intino une Eboli vengeresse à souhait à défaut d'être une styliste irréprochable ; Dessi une touchante Elisabeth mais sans doute à la limite de ses moyens de l'époque et un Pavarotti au zénith plutôt meilleur acteur que d'habitude et qui semble se "donner" davantage pour le public de le Scala que pour celui du Met ...Superbe direction du grand maestro Muti . La direction d'acteurs est , on pouvait s'y attendre, conventionelle, mais au bout du compte peu importe tout le reste vous fera passer un moment magnifique !
